We refinish cabinets for a living, so you might expect us to say refinishing always wins. It doesn't. Here's the honest breakdown we give homeowners at kitchen tables across Reno and Sparks every week.
The Numbers, Side by Side
For a typical mid-size Reno kitchen (25–35 door and drawer fronts):
- Professional refinishing (sprayed enamel): roughly $3,500–$8,000 depending on size, condition and color change. Timeline: about a week, kitchen fully usable most of it.
- New semi-custom cabinets, installed: roughly $15,000–$35,000+ once you include demolition, installation, and the countertop, backsplash and plumbing work that replacement almost always drags along. Timeline: 6–12 weeks including lead times.
That's the famous 70% savings — and with modern catalyzed enamels, the finish on refinished doors is genuinely comparable to factory cabinetry: hard, cleanable, and free of brush marks. When Refinishing Is the Clear Winner
- Solid boxes, dated look. Most Reno homes built from the 1980s through the 2010s have structurally excellent wood or plywood cabinets wearing an oak or honey-maple finish that simply aged out of style. This is the textbook refinishing candidate.
- You like your layout. If the kitchen works and you just want it to look new, replacement means paying five figures to end up with the same floor plan.
- Selling within a few years. Refinishing delivers one of the highest returns per dollar of any pre-sale improvement — Realtors send us clients for exactly this reason.
The Two Cases Where Replacement Wins
1. The boxes themselves are failing. Water-damaged particleboard that's swelling, delaminating or crumbling around the sink base can't be painted back to health. Paint fixes surfaces, not structure.
2. The layout is the real problem. If you need an island where there isn't one, want walls moved, or the kitchen fundamentally doesn't function — that's a remodel, not a refinish.
